Our Veterinarians

Dr. James Wesseldyk
Practice Owner, Veterinarian
Dr. James Wesseldyk—known affectionately by his staff and clientele as Doc—has been the sole owner of Pet Vet Family Pet Care Center since the hospital opened its doors in 1983. He’s been tending to the pets and animal parents of this area for more than three decades!

Dr. Wesseldyk is especially proud of the knowledge and professionalism of his talented staff, and he continues to remain passionate about providing the highest level of state-of-the-art care for the patients of Pet Vet Family Pet Care Center. Above all, he focuses on cultivating a family-centered atmosphere—true to the clinic’s name!—for his clients, patients, and staff members.

Away from the office, Doc is actively involved with his church where he is a Deacon and Treasurer, and he is also active with Angel Food Ministries. He enjoys photography, baseball, reading, traveling, and doting on his own pets. He shares his life with a mixed-breed dog, Roxy, and Walker, one of Pet Vet Family Pet Care Center’s clinic cats. Walker doesn’t let her three-legged stance slow her down in the least; she particularly loves climbing to obscure spots on top of the office cabinets, ready to pounce on anyone who walks by.
Dr. Heather Short
Associate Veterinarian
Dr. Heather Short’s passion for animal care began when she was only eight years old—it hasn’t wavered since. For her, another career path simply wouldn’t have made sense! Dr. Short is proud to care for pets and their owners every day as an Associate Veterinarian with the Pet Vet Family Pet Care team.

Dr. Short graduated from Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine in 1996, and has been practicing in small-animal medicine ever since. Medically, she enjoys preventative care, wellness exams, dermatological work, and quality-of-life care for pets suffering from chronic diseases. Most of all, she loves creating new relationships with the area’s pet owners and their beloved companions.

Dr. Short’s interests outside of veterinary medicine include scrapbooking, photography, visiting cities like Chicago and Traverse City, bowling, bicycling, swimming, and spending quality time with friends, family, and pets. She has two children—one in college and one in high school—and shares her home with a trio of domestic short-haired cats: Mittens, Mynx, and Shadow.
Dr. Alicia Mulero Kendall
Associate Veterinarian
Dr. Alicia Mulero Kendall’s parents have been animal lovers ever since she was born, and they were always willing to take in strays and help find the animals suitable homes. She’s proud to help better the lives of pets every day as an Associate Veterinarian here at Pet Vet Family Pet Care Center.

Dr. Kendall is originally from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology from the University of Puerto Rico. In 2003, she moved to Lansing to finish her studies in veterinary medicine and become a licensed Veterinarian at Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

When a friend told her about an open position here at Pet Vet Family Pet Care Center, Dr. Kendall jumped at the chance to join the clinic team. She’s been a member of the family since 2009, and her favorite part of the job is forming lasting relationships with her patients as well as their loving owners. Nothing beats getting to watch puppies and kittens grow up over the years!

Outside of work, Dr. Kendall likes spending time in the Michigan outdoors when the weather is nice, reading good books, dabbling in arts and crafts, and doting on her own pets at home. She has two rescued dogs and a cat. Pancakes, Mr. Miyagi, and Luci have kept things interesting!
Dr. Nicole DeBruine
Associate Veterinarian
When she was a little girl, Dr. Nicole DeBruine wanted a pet dog more than anything in the world—she assumed that becoming a veterinarian would be the easiest way to make that happen. As she got older, Dr. DeBruine started to realize the true significance of the incredible bonds we share with our animal companions. She knew that she wanted to help support and strengthen those connections in whatever way possible!

Dr. DeBruine is from Hudsonville, Michigan and attended Michigan State University for her undergraduate studies before enrolling in the University’s College of Veterinary Medicine to earn her Doctorate. She graduated as a licensed veterinarian in 2015, then returned to western Michigan to start her career in private practice.

Dr. DeBruine joined the Pet Vet Family Pet Care Center in the summer of 2016 on the recommendation of a friend, and she’s been helping the area’s pets and animal parents here ever since. She has a particular fondness for dermatology work, which she fell in love with during her clinical rotations in veterinary school, and she also likes working alongside the team’s other talented veterinarians and staff every day. Dr. DeBruine never tires of learning something new!

When she isn’t tending to pets’ needs here at the hospital, Dr. DeBruine can be found visiting with family and friends, camping, reading, and enjoying the company of her rambunctious Shih Tzu, Sachi.
Dr. Sara Prygoski
Associate Veterinarian
Although she had always had cats in her family home while growing up, the first time that Dr. Sara Prygoski was solely responsible for a pet came when she adopted her first cat, Tabby, from the local Humane Society. Taking Tabby for routine appointments, scheduling dental cleanings, and facing the anxieties of caring for a sick animal all by herself made a permanent impression on Dr. Prygoski—the bond she formed with her beloved pet made her want to help others through the power of veterinary medicine!

Dr. Prygoski is from Grand Blanc, Michigan and attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor to earn her Bachelor’s degree in ecology and evolutionary biology in 2009. After graduation, she worked in a freshwater biogeochemistry research lab at the University, traveling to the North Slope of Alaska to perform fieldwork during her tenure there. It didn’t take long for Dr. Prygoski to come to a realization: she would love to combine her love for science, her knack for working with people, and her passion for animal care! That’s when she decided to take the leap into the veterinary field, and signed on at Michigan State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

When a classmate of hers mentioned an opening here at Pet Vet Family Pet Care Center, Dr. Prygoski jumped at the chance to join a talented and compassionate team of animal-lovers just like herself. She became a member of the hospital family in June of 2018, and is thrilled to care for the pets and animal owners of Kalamazoo as an Associate Veterinarian. Medically, Dr. Prygoski enjoys dentistry work and animal nutrition, but her favorite part of her job is conversing one-on-one with the area’s pet owners to impart her knowledge of proper animal care.

Outside of her interests in veterinary medicine, Dr. Prygoski likes reading, catching a good movie, camping and hiking in the great outdoors, learning to play the ukulele, and spending time with her family and pets at home. She and her husband, Jeff, have two cats: the aforementioned Tabby who is the unchallenged boss of the house, and a kitten named Church who has learned how to “sit” for treats.
