5 Things Your Puppy Needs to Know

Getting a new puppy is an exciting and fun event. You’re starting out on a long and beautiful journey with little Fido, and you have years of tail wags and doggy smooches to look forward to. However, that first year is a crucial time. Your new pet has a lot to learn! A Portage, MI vet lists some things your puppy needs to know.

Basic Obedience

Training your dog properly will not only keep him safer, it will make things easier on you both. If Fido won’t obey you, his disobedience can put a strain on your friendship. All dogs should know simple commands, such as Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down. Work on these basics one at a time. Shoot for about 15 minutes a day, and stay focused on each command in turn. Don’t move on until you know your adorable student has mastered the command he’s working on.

Hopefully this one goes without saying, but housetraining should start right away. You should take little Fido out several times a day. Whenever your canine buddy relieves himself outside, immediately reward him with treats and praise.

Crate Training

We strongly recommend that puppies be crate trained. If you train little Fido to think of his crate as a cozy den, you’ll have a much easier time crating him for travel or appointments. Be sure to buy a crate that is the right size for your furry friend’s expected adult size: otherwise, you’ll have to replace it in a few months.

People Are Friends

Socialization is very important! Exposing your little buddy to new places and friendly faces while he’s young will help him form a positive opinion about the world. If you don’t have a lot of time, enroll your pooch in doggy daycare.

That He’s Loved

One of the most important things to teach little Fido is simply that he is loved. Your four-legged friend will stand by you faithfully over the years, but that special bond between you needs to be nurtured. Spend lots of time with your puppy, and pay attention to him every day. Give him toys, treats, and belly rubs, and toss his favorite ball or stick for him.
