Holiday Gifts for Puppies

Has a new puppy recently joined your household? Congratulations! You are definitely in for some adorable moments this holiday season. Don’t forget to pick up a gift or two for little Fido! A Portage, MI vet lists some great holiday gift ideas for puppies in this article.

Puppies are very, very playful and curious. Little Fido will be very interested in exploring his world, and may try to investigate things by chewing on them. Keep your furry buddy occupied by giving him lots of safe, suitable toys. Puzzle toys are great, because they can keep dogs occupied for hours!

Nothing will get that tail wagging like a special snack! Store-bought treats are fine, though you do want to look at the labels and choose products with high-quality ingredients that you can actually identify. Or, you can make your furry buddy some homemade doggy treats. Just take care to stick to pet-safe ingredients, like shredded meat, peanut butter, pureed pumpkin, eggs, or cheese. Ask your vet for more information.

Did you know that dogs spend about half of their time sleeping? Get Fido a comfy bed to snuggle up in as he dreams of chasing squirrels and finding endless piles of bacon. Large breeds will benefit from the extra support of orthopedic beds, while smaller pooches may prefer beds with raised edges.

Little Fido has a lot to learn in that first year. Making sure your canine buddy knows and obeys basic commands, like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down, is very important. If you’re not sure about how to go about training your furry friend, enroll him in obedience classes. It will be well worth it in the long run. Think of it as a gift that will keep on giving!

If you haven’t crate-trained little Fido yet, this is a great time to start. Even if you don’t plan to crate your dog regularly, it’s helpful to get him used to the idea. That way, if he ever has to be crated at the vet’s or groomer’s, or during travel, he won’t be as unsettled. The key is to make your canine pal’s crate cozy and inviting by adding soft bedding and lots of toys.
